CHAPTER 24

Ty's phone buzzed in his pocket and he pulled it out expecting a text from Inya. She was coming in tonight and the suspense was killing him. They hadn't seen each other in a little over two weeks. Inya constantly sent him pictures and she wasn't shy at all. It was driving him nuts. He was desperately hoping she would show up early enough so they could have some time alone before his set which was in a couple of hours. He couldn't wait to get his hands on her.

When Ty looked at the phone it wasn't a text, from Inya or anyone one else. It was his calendar with a reminder about Rob's birthday. Seeing Rob's birthday, with the note he had put in, "Skates?" was a bit of a shock. Ty remembered when he had put the reminder in his phone. Back in August Sara had gotten a calendar that started in September and she was filling out all the stuff she could. She already had calendars from the boys' schools, with dates for events going all the way out to June.

Ty had been in the kitchen while she sat at the table muttering to herself, adding stuff in out of her head in between consulting the lists from the middle and elementary schools. He had heard her say birthday and gone over to look over her shoulder.

"When's your birthday?" he had asked her, realizing he didn't know.

"December fourteenth," she had said.

Ty realized that date was also in his calendar, on his phone, too. He should probably delete it.

"You ready?" Connor asked him.

"Yeah, Ty said.

Ty had managed to get into a somewhat regular exercise routine on the road. Part of it was running laps around whichever arena they happened to be in. Connor offered to do it with him and Ty liked having him as a running partner. They pushed each other pretty hard, which was fun. Occasionally the hallway would be clogged with delivery pallets for concessions or the merchandise for the stores, but in that case they just spun around and headed back in the other direction.

"Which is it today?"

"Counterclockwise, I think," Ty said.

It didn't really matter, but they usually alternated it. They went through the warm-up they had developed, then they stretched and were ready. They generally didn't talk much while they ran. They pushed themselves too hard for that, which was the whole point. Ty used the time to think. Today he was thinking about Rob and the kid's birthday.

Ty wasn't sure if he should send the kid a present. He wasn't sure it was appropriate and he wasn't sure Sara would be happy about it. On the other hand, he felt kind of bad about the whole thing. He knew from his Dad that Rob was playing hockey again. He knew from Sara that it was expensive. And he had no reason to think her financial situation was any different that it had been when they were together.

Ty's financial situation, however, was very different from a couple of months ago.
